Soldering Safety Checklist UK: Set Up a Safer Home or Small Workshop Bench
Check the iron stand, clear the bench of flammables, place local fume extraction next to the joint, and keep your face out of the plume before you switch anything on. Those four points decide whether a UK home or small-workshop soldering bench is ready; a desktop fan, an open window or a tidy-looking mat does not.
This soldering safety checklist UK guide is for hobby electronics, instrument repair and small-board work at a dedicated bench. It is not a workplace COSHH method statement. Treat official HSE sheets as the reader-verifiable baseline, then apply the checks you can actually see and correct at home.
Before switching on a soldering iron
Walk the bench in one pass. If any item fails, correct it before power is applied.
Before-start checklist
- Iron rest: a stable stand is on the bench, the hot end cannot roll, and the cable is not stretched across a walkway.
- Work zone: only the board, tools and solder you need are in reach; paper, solvents, packaging foam and fabric are off the mat.
- Extraction position: the capture opening is close to the joint, not behind your head and not across the room.
- Posture: you can sit or stand so the plume rises away from your breathing zone rather than through it.
- Eye and skin protection: safety glasses are to hand, and you will not rest a forearm on a recently soldered area.
- Housekeeping: swarf, clipped leads and flux-soaked tissue have a metal or glass bin, not a paper cup.
- People and pets: nobody will walk into the cable, and food or drink is off the bench.
If the stand is missing, the cable is damaged, or you cannot keep a clear, fire-safe work zone, leave the iron unplugged. Switching on to “just tin the tip” is how burns and knocked-over irons happen.
How to control solder flux fumes
Rosin-cored solder flux fume is a recognised cause of occupational asthma and can sensitise skin. UK workplace guidance in HSE guidance on soldering with rosin-cored solder expects a combination of the lowest practical iron temperature, good general ventilation, and local exhaust ventilation such as a capture hood, booth or on-tip extraction, with the capture opening kept close to the soldering point.
At a home bench you will not be running a COSHH assessment, but the same physics apply. Place extraction so it takes the plume at the joint. Keep your head to one side. Do not lean over the work “just to see”. Check that the extractor actually moves air every time you start, and that hoses and filters are not blocked with condensed flux.
The employee-facing leaflet HSE advice on solder fume and you also tells workers to keep their face out of the fume, to use the extraction provided, and to report coughing, wheeze, runny eyes or a tight chest rather than working through symptoms. That advice is not only for factories. If you already react to flux fume, stop and get medical advice; do not treat a new extractor as a cure.
Is an open window or small fan enough?
No. An open window or a small fan is general ventilation. It can dilute a room, and HSE still asks for a good standard of general ventilation, but it is not a substitute for capturing fume at the joint. A fan that blows across the bench can also wreck extraction by pushing the plume into your face or across the room.
Do not assume a foam filter, a carbon sponge, or an untested “solder smoke absorber” makes exposure safe. Unless you can show that the device captures at the joint and that its filter is the type the maker specifies, treat it as a comfort extra, not as protection. Recirculating boxes without a suitable high-efficiency filter are a weak control in workplace guidance; they are not a licence to solder in a closed bedroom.
Fire and burn controls on the bench
A soldering iron is a continuous ignition source. Keep a metal stand on the same mat as the work. Never rest a hot iron on wood, plastic, paper or the edge of a laptop. Return it to the stand every time you look away, even for a few seconds.
Keep a ceramic or metal dish for dross and a closed tin for used wipes. Have a fire blanket or a small, suitable extinguisher you already know how to use within reach of the door, not hidden under the bench. Do not throw hot offcuts into a waste-paper bin. Let boards and tips cool on the stand or a ceramic tile before you bag them.
Burns come from impatience as often as from fire. Assume every tip, nozzle and recently soldered connector is hot. Do not test temperature with a fingertip. If you use hot air as well as an iron, park the handpiece in its cradle with the nozzle pointing away from cables and solvent bottles.
Electrical checks a home user can reasonably make
A home user can make simple, visual electrical checks. They cannot certify a product, rewrite a fuse, or declare a station “UK compliant” from a blog. Before each session:
- Look at the plug, fuse carrier and mains lead for cracks, scorch marks, crushed insulation or a loose cable grip.
- Confirm the station sits on a dry, stable surface and that the lead is not a trip or pinch hazard.
- Use a residual-current protected socket if you have one, and unplug the station when you leave the room.
- Do not use damaged, repaired-with-tape, or mystery-voltage supplies. Do not open the station housing to “check the transformer”.
If the housing is cracked, the lead is damaged, or the station smells of burning plastic, stop. Replacement or a competent appliance inspection is the next step, not a longer session at a lower temperature.
When to stop work or seek competent help
Stop work, unplug the iron, and leave the area to ventilate if you feel chest tightness or eye sting that does not clear when you step away, or if extraction fails mid-job. You should stop if fumes collect at face height. You should stop if the iron stand is missing or unstable. You should stop if the mains lead, plug or station housing is damaged. You should stop if you cannot keep a clear, fire-safe work zone.
Seek competent help rather than improvising when the job involves mains-voltage assemblies, battery-management boards, safety-critical controls, or a workplace where COSHH and health surveillance apply. A hobby bench checklist does not authorise those jobs.
